A Unique Perspective

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve trained Kyokushin Karate since I was about 9 years old. A few months ago, I had the honour of doing some portraits of our branch chief, Shihan Stuart Corrigal. It was a little intimidating to be the one on the giving end of the instructions, as I’m usually on the receiving end, but it was a great experience! The portraits were to be used for a very specific purpose. One of the longtime members of the organization is also an accomplished artist and he wanted to create some watercolour paintings. His process is interesting and I was asked to create close ups of different parts of the body, as well as full length images. These images were to form the basis for what would be created. It was fun for me to work to someone else’s creative vision. A couple of days ago, I received an email with scans of the final portraits and am so excited to share them with you.

Here’s one of the images I captured in studio. This is the dress uniform that is worn by Shihan at tournaments and other official functions.

Obviously, this is what’s worn for training.

I loved playing a small role in helping these portraits come to life. Thank you Shihan, for allowing me this opportunity and Sensei Jan, you did an incredible job on these portraits.
