I’ve known Dean for a LONG time. We met because of karate and he’s a big part of the reason that I have my second degree black belt. He’s an amazing instructor and a great friend. So when he approached me a couple of months ago about wanting to surprise his parents for their 40th wedding anniversary with a family portrait, I was happy to help.
Early last month, we met at Tynehead Park in Surrey. As I was driving out that direction, I was getting more and more nervous by the second. Despite a beautiful blue sky in Richmond (and almost everywhere else in the Lower Mainland!), there was a very BIG, very BLACK cloud hanging over the part of Surrey where we were headed. I turned on the radio and it was reporting a HAIL storm. (I felt the need to remind mother nature that it was APRIL!!!) Eric and I looked at each other and shrugged. We’d head out and meet them at the park anyway. If it was still nasty when we got there, we’d figure something else out.
Fortunately for us, the sun came out, just as we pulled into the park. The recent hail/rain had left the trees dripping with water and the park looking very lush. It made for some great light and I’m thrilled with what we captured.
The whole family. They chose this one to be a 20×30 canvas for the parents…apparently there were some happy tears when it was opened on Saturday!
This was one of my favourite images from the day.
This next image comes with a rather lengthy explaination. Dean takes his dog for a walk in Tynehead park everyday. Sometimes with his mom, sometimes with Sherry, his wife. We’d arrived at the park a little early to scout out some locations, but we always like to hear what our clients have to suggest. Dean told us about this really cool stump and it worked great as a backdrop for the black and white family photograph above. But when we first arrived at the spot, Dean made a comment about getting up on top of it to take a photo… so he did. This is the fun we had with it….
We had a great time that afternoon and I’m glad that we were able to pull off the surprise. A great big THANK YOU to Dean, Sherry, Gary, Terri, Alexey and Jordan for being such great sports and sitting on wet rocks. But mostly, thank you for trusting me with such a special gift. I hope your parents enjoy it for many, many years to come 🙂
Have a great Monday and keep smiling!
