Get Outside – Peaceful Parenting Challenge – Week 9

Welcome to the Peaceful Parenting Challenge Blog Carnival: Week #9 – Spending Time Outside.

We are in the home stretch with only one more week of the challenge left to go. I’m curious, how many of you are still working on the things that we did at the beginning of the challenge? Have you made any changes to your every day life or have you fallen back into old habits?

When I first agreed to do this challenge, I didn’t figure it would be that hard. Practice a few exercises and get on with things. The reality is, that for me, it really opened my eyes to what my constant need to be busy was doing to my family, my husband and to me. So I did the only thing I knew how to do, I stopped. I wrote lists. I talked to my mom. My question: “How do I get control of my life?”

This is what I’ve done. I’ve implemented a “schedule”. It has a bedtime, for me and for the kids. It sets up a routine for our days. It limits the amount of time that I just spent browsing through Facebook and reading random articles. (I actually set a timer on my computer, as it’s so easy to lose track of time.) I’ve also implemented “mandatory” outside time… which really made this week’s challenge easy.

In the morning, the kids get up, they eat, we head outside for a little bit to play. After lunch and Tehya goes down for her nap, I set up some art stuff or a game for Ella and sit down at my computer to work. Dinner is on the table between 5 and 5:30 and after dinner, we all go for a walk. Sometimes, we head out to meet Eric from the train, sometimes we can’t seem to make it out the door in time, so we just go for a family walk or bike ride as soon as he’s home and has had dinner. Then it’s home, bath, stories and bed. After the kids go to bed, I come back down to my computer and work a little more and then I’m off to bed by 10:30. Lights out at 11 and the cycle starts all over again in the morning.

This has been the “schedule” for the past two weeks in our house and it seems to be working. Things are less chaotic. I’m actually able to tick things off the to-do list, instead of getting a few things done here or there but not actually completing anything. The kids are actually going to sleep at a decent hour… and they are also getting up earlier, which means we can actually register for some fun morning things.

The girls are LOVING all the outside time. Ella actually cried a couple of nights ago when Eric got home before we could head out to meet him. They now race down the stairs after dinner for our nightly walk. They are sleeping better and everyone is happier. Life is good 🙂 (I’ll figure out later what I’m going to do with our routine when the rains really set it!)
