When I was a little girl, I liked to lay on my back outside and watch the clouds drift by. I liked to see what shapes I could find. I was also the little girl who believed in wishing on stars and seeing magic in the little things. I am still very much someone who looks for the silver lining in things and wishes for the impossible.
The events that took place on Monday at the Boston Marathon, made me wish for something different. It made me wish for a world where there is no hate. Where no one is willing to hurt innocent people for the pursuit of their cause. It made me wish that the wars that are happening far away from here weren’t happening. It made me wish that every child could grow up with equal opportunities and no fear. Sadly, I know isn’t the case, that this is not the world we live in.
BUT, being the girl who wishes on stars and looks for silvers linings, here’s what I also know. I know that I have the power to affect change in my community and in my children. I can teach them to love and to see the good in others. I can teach them to be kind to those that are “different” from them. I can show my kids that each person can make a small difference if you’re willing to try.
So here’s what I need from you. Tell me what you do to make the world a better place. Help me see what other things I can do to make this world a better place.
