Ever have one of those moments where you longed for the way things once were? The other night, Eric and I got to chatting about the business, the state of the photography industry and what our hopes and dreams are for the future. It was during this conversation that I admitted that I missed photographing with film. Yes, you read that right. I MISS FILM!! I miss the anticipation of getting my film back, I miss the darkroom process, I miss the magic.
There’s so much mystery wrapped up in this little canister.
The flip side of the coin is that digital is so much faster. You get instant feedback. You can post and share within seconds of taking an image. You are liberated to try new things and break rules because it’s not going to cost you a small fortune in developing costs and you’ll know right away if the vision you have in your head is actually what you’re getting.
But… it’s just not the same.
So this is what I’ve decided to do. This weekend, I’m going to pull out my film camera and go for a walk with my kids… provided, of course, that mother nature decides to cooperate! I’m going to capture some photographs and enjoy the anticipation of waiting to see what I got. Then, I plan to head into the darkroom at some point soon and develop some prints. I’m going to feed my need to be creative in the old school way.
I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂 Happy Wednesday!
