To Build or Not to Build…

To build or not to build… that is the question. (Cheesy, I know, but I couldn’t help it!)

When we first started looking at houses and property in Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge, one of the things we kept thinking/dreaming/hoping for was something that was big enough to build a studio on. When we found our home, I was excited, because we definitely have the space to build… but now I’m torn. I don’t know if there’s really a point in building it. We don’t do a lot of indoor “studio” sessions. We like the personality of people’s homes and the freedom of being outdoors. We like creating images that have meaning to our clients, and that can sometimes be hard to create in a studio space. That said, I’ve always dreamed of having a studio space. A place for clients to come when they want to keep a session a secret (like the one we did last night for one lucky dad’s birthday present!) and the weather doesn’t appear that it will cooperate. A place where we can hold photography workshops and fun promotions. A place that is just for business. I guess in some ways, I feel that it will make me a “legitimate” photographer. (The fact that I’ve been doing this for 17 years doesn’t seem enough…)

BUT… it seems that the more Eric and I talk about it, the more we go around in circles. The pros and cons list is completely out of control and honestly I don’t know which end is up anymore. So we thought we’d put it out there to all our friends, family, clients, our regular blog readers and anyone else who happens to find this post and see what kind of response we get.

If we were to build a studio in our backyard, would that make you more/less likely to hire us? Do you feel that it would make us more “legitimate” or is this just a block in my own mind? If we were to hold photography workshops (both beginner and advanced) at our studio, would you come? Does Pitt Meadows feel too far to travel, if you’re in Vancouver? What are your thoughts on a home studio? Would you be uncomfortable to come into our backyard?

A part of our backyard space…

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! Happy Monday!!
