A friend asked me the other day about a photograph that I took of Tehya several months ago.
She wanted to know what I did with my lighting… it was pretty simple and didn’t require anything fancy. Just a little understanding of light, a pillow and a camera 🙂 (Cute baby is also optional!)
The windows in our apartment are south facing, which when the sun is shining, some pretty amazing light streams in through the window. We are also lucky to have a balcony above ours that shades some of that light coming in, so we aren’t getting really direct light.
Here’s an image of the relationship of the bed, to our window.
For the image of Tehya, I had her propped up on the pillow, where Ella is in the image above. I was in a little bit of a hurry when I was taking the photograph, so didn’t want to pull out any extra equipment. I simply pulled the pillow case off the other pillow, propped it up on the right hand side and voila, a “natural” reflector. (In other words, it bounced some light back onto the shadow side of Tehya’s face.) Simple. Quick. Effective!
Hope this helps, and if you have a question, please feel free to send us an email! (If you would like a lot more help on lighting, please check out our Speedlight Intensive that we announced on Friday!)
Keep Smiling 🙂
