One of the questions I ask my clients most often when they are inquiring about portraits is, “What do you plan to do with them?” Often, people decide to have professional portraits taken out of a sense of duty or obligation, with no real sense of purpose for why. So here are a few thoughts…
1 – First, think about WHY you want to have the photographs taken. Is it simply a matter of documenting this particular moment in time. Do you want to be able to look back and remember how tiny your son or daughter was when they were born? Do you want it to represent something for you? Or are you simply doing it because you think you “should”?
When we took this image of Tehya as a newborn, it was two fold. I wanted to remember how small she was, but I also wanted to capture our love of yarn and knitting.
2- Decide WHAT you want to do with the images. Do you want to create an album? Do you want a piece of wall art? Before you invest the money, really think about what you want to do with it. I see so many people hoarding digital images and they have massive hard drives filled to the brim… but their homes are devoid of any signs of them. It doesn’t matter if you’d prefer a collage of smaller images (as in 4×6’s in a funky frame tucked onto your hall wall) or if you’d rather a large canvas that makes a statement. What matters is that you’ve invested the money in having portraits taken… don’t be satisfied with just a disk of images and a new Facebook profile picture! You need to SHOW THEM OFF!!!
I know I’ve said it before, but for the first year of their life, we photographed our girls once a month, with the intention of creating a special album for each of them. Ella’s is done and it sits proudly on one of our side tables in the living room. Tehya’s is in the design phase (with the move, it’s been on the back burner!) and I hope it have it finished in the next couple of months. I can’t wait to flip through it!
Here’s one of the pages from Ella’s book.
3 – Decide WHERE you want them to go. So you’ve decided that you want to have a family portrait created and you’d like a beautiful canvas to hang on your wall… your next decision, where are you going to put it? If you look around your home or think about the places that you spend the most time, create a piece that will work well in that space. We’ve just created something for our home… and it arrives later today… and I can’t wait to share it with you! (so, sorry, no image for this point :))
Every day we make choices. Choices about what to wear, what to eat, how to exercise. Most we make without thinking about it. When you make the choice to have a professional portrait session, take the time to think about it. The who, how, what, where and why’s of this decision are important. If you’re willing to invest in photography, make sure you’re investing wisely 🙂
