This week’s tip is really quite simple. It’s all about breaking out of the usual photography rut. When photographing people, most of us try to get our subjects to look at the camera. We’re looking for that full face view and a big smile. The problem here is the expression can often be forced and unnatural. Try photographing the profile. Half of the face, especially when lit from the other side is often very flattering. There is the extra benefit that it often captures your subject when they are unaware, creating an image with a genuine expression.
I photographed Ella this past weekend playing with rocks on the beach. This profile is one of my favourites!
Try it out, you may be surprised at how much you love the results!
